CAN OBI IMPROVE NIGERIAN ENTERTAINMENT LANDSCAPE?

Obi Asaka – New Director General, National Council of Arts and Culture, Nigeria

On January 14, 2024, President Bola Tinubu appointed Obi Asaka as the Director-General of
the National Council for Arts and culture in Nigeria. Obi Asaka knows the job having formed
Storms Record in 1991 to push Nigerian music signing Rapper Naeto C. Ikechukwu, Art

Alade, Banky W and Tosin Martins. Obi Asaka has produced documentaries and has been
appointed to the African Advisory Committee of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of
African arts in Washington DC, he is a judge on Nigerian Idol and has served as special
adviser to Former President Jonathan Goodluck.
The big question is can he expand afrobeats to Afro rnb, Disco and other genres, including
making of biopics of Nigerian leaders who have served the country well. Afrobeat &
Nollywood need to infuse new genres and one believes Obi is the man for it. President
Tinubu also appointed Ali Nuhu as DG of Nigerian Film Corporation and Tubosun Tijani, a
tech founder was appointed Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital economy.
TND advises he should cast his nest all over Nigeria and the Nigerian diaspora and not just
Lagos.
