I was pleased to read the “breathtaking” congratulatory letter released from the Office of The Private Secretary of The Oba of Benin, Chief S.O Obamwonyi, congratulating Gov. Monday Okpebholo on his 100th day as Governor of Edo State
The letter was very well written, explained and concluded. It praised MO for his victory at the polls as a divine answer to Edo’s people prayers, and listed event after event of catastrophic ills that the last administration under Godwin Obaseki had bestowed upon Edo people and our traditional institutions.
Godwin Obaseki undermined, insulted, and almost destroyed our traditional institutions (FACTS). His indiscriminate actions against our traditional institutions and the reckless support he got from many Edos people is the first reason for this article. To think that many Edos could be psyched into a ploy that will undermine our traditional institutions is very dangerous and now has to be reviewed. It must never happen again. The line in the Palace congratulatory letter which very humanely mentioned how the last administration “brutalized the psyche of the Edo people” spoke to the fact that the Palace had witnessed unthinkable actions.
Many good Edo observers could not believe what they were seeing amongst Edos in our dear Edo State & the diaspora. Godwin Obaseki managed for 8 years to bring out the worse in so many Edo people that you thought you knew very well over many many years. How a stranger from Lagos could turn us against ourselves and many, against our royal household was not now beyond the realms of reality. Our Royal father saw this, he knew his people do not behave like this. That is why I believe the letter was so strong and well crafted, starting with the brutalization of the Edo people’s psyche. Oba Ewuare II was able to identify the root cause and dealt with it, appropriately because he knows Edo people are better than this.
To those who had their psyche turned and brutalized, our royal father has spoken to congratulate the governor and mend fences, politically or otherwise and move on to building a better Edo State with the government of the day.
As for Godwin Obaseki and his mission of vengeance, as Phillip Shaibu will put it, “OFONEE” The End in Nigerian Politics- No Senator, No Party, No Home, you will never see him in Edo State again.
